More In-depth Laser Vision Correction Q & A with Dr. Chynn:
Q: Is it necessary to wear sunglasses for a month? Is this only in bright light or should I wear them anytime I am outside?
A: You don’t need very dark, dark glasses or complete wrap-arounds. Even light sun glasses block UV rays now. You only need to wear them on very bright sunny days.Q: Many Lasik websites mention different procedures on each eye. Do I need a reading eye and a long distance eye? A: You have to tell me how old you are; if you are over 40 like me, I would recommend Monovision (1 eye for distance and 1 for reading).Q: I feel that my left eye is dominant because the corrected vision is better (due to astigmatism). The bad part is that I use my right eye in sports because I am right handed. (Have you ever tried to throw a dart with the left hand or throw with the right hand sighting with the left hand?). Can eye dominance change? Does this change the laser vision correction procedure? A: We will test eye dominance in several ways when you come in so that we are sure which eye is dominant, which is important if you elect to have the Monovision procedure.Q: How much should I earmark for the LASEK and CustomVue for both eyes, considering the 15%
Aetna Discount and the $500 Deloitte discount? A: I don’t know if your Deloitte discount is set up yet; you may need to give a copy of the attached document to your HR department. Assuming this is set up; your total will be around $4000 for LASEK in both eyes and CustomVue in your dominant eye and Monovision in your non-dominant eye. This is one of our most popular laser vision correction options.Q: Is there a picture that represents 20/50? I just wonder what I will be seeing when I return to work the next Monday (right after the Lasek procedure). A: This is a good question. 20/50 is the DMV standard for barely legal to drive in the daytime. Think about those bad drivers on the road and how they just scraped by on their DMV test, and that is how you will be seeing on Monday.Q: I have to spend 5-8 hours per week on planes. Can I survive the ultra dry re-circulated air (with my new laser corrected eyes)? A: Yes, but you need to keep your eyes closed, use liquid tears, maybe even the thicker gel tear, try to sleep or nap, and don’t watch the bad movie or drink the free alcohol.Q: I spend 80% of my time on the road in multiple cities. If I am good with the drops on the road can I use the humidifier on the weekends when I am home in
Seattle? A: Yes, this is fine and lots of our patients do just that.Q: Is vision completely blocked with bandages right after surgery? If so, how do I apply drops and get around?A: Clear protective lens cover the eyes after surgery so that vision is not blocked at all.Q: Can I bring in my own music to listen to during the Lasik procedure?A: Yes, just bring in a CD and we will play it in the OR to relax you.
